“A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one” – Meet Viktor Vicsek
Date:04 September 2018
In current usage, the above phrase is usually meant sarcastically. Calling someone a “jack of all trades” implies that they aren’t very skillful in any of the areas in which they claim expertise, their knowledge or skills are superficial rather than comprehensive. However, the phrase was formerly intended as a compliment, meaning that a person is a generalist rather than a specialist, versatile and adept at many things. That’s how I see Viktor.
He was among the very first ones out there working with projection mapping in the 90s, and man he slays! Animation, light installation, technical details of all the equipment that exist, and millions of hacks you use when budgets pose a challenge – he always has an idea. I would say he’s a polymath, but he would hate that. I’m not sure he would even be chuffed to be part of this website.
“I kinda fell in love with teaching, you know,” he says when I ask him about Limelight’s new initiative, Limelight Academy. “With teaching, I understood and methodized my knowledge, and it’s a different understanding. I love what I do, and it’s exciting to try to make someone else understand and fall in love with it, too.” Besides the Academy, Viktor teaches projection mapping at the only university that offers degree courses in the subject, Budapest Metropolitan University.
“It’s not easy” he says. “When people realize the complexity of projection mapping, they sometimes get too overwhelmed and give up. There are so many challenges along the way to the realization of a project, and you must have a complex knowledge and experience to be able to solve the issues that come up. From understanding what your animation will look like projected onto an actual building to technical details and dealing with a client, so you’ll need project management skills, too. If you see yourself as an artist, these things are sometimes hard to do.”
The Academy program is for future mappers that are enthusiastic, passionate and not afraid of hard work, however, they sometimes are also stunned by the complexity of it all. Well, not everyone is lucky enough to be a jack of all trades. We are so proud of you, Viktor.
