Limelight 3D Projection Mapping announced the launch of Limelight Academy, a worldwide one-of-a-kind concept, with a Projection Mapping Masterclass for Factory Light Festival in June 2018, followed by the second one in 2019 for Vivid Sydney at Chatswood, and a third one for Factory Light Festival in 2019. With the launch of a long-term program, we are aiming at contributing to the development of the 3D projection mapping scene by offering a unique education program for young talents, with a curriculum based on 15+ years of experience.
A worldwide one-of-a-kind concept.
Free education to young talents from around the world.
An opportunity to show your work to a wide audience.
Professional mentoring and support throughout the program.
There is a growing number of mapping contests all around the world with different structures and money prize pools. What is common in almost all of them is that they only pay artists for their work in case they win the contest. There’s no professional help or specific education for projection mapping that is for experienced animators entering the contests who have no or limited knowledge and experience in projection mapping, especially outdoors and in large scale.
Limelight as a collective has members that were among the pioneers of projection mapping. Creating artworks since the 90s, we have gathered a vast amount of experience in an art form that can basically be learned only by practice. After a great experience with a workshop held for a young Belgian animator that the team was asked to do by the organizers of Ghent Light Festival, we decided to create our own program. We strongly believe that artists have the chance and the responsibility to share their knowledge and experience with the future generation of projection mapping artists, and we were looking for a way that is accessible for anyone who is passionate, willing to learn, and work hard to create amazing projection mapping artworks in the future.
The result of the above is a worldwide one-of-a-kind, brand new concept called Limelight Academy that launched with the first ever Projection Mapping Masterclass in cooperation with Factory Light Festival in June 2018. It was the launch of a long-term program in which our team offers young talents the opportunity to attend and learn from the collective while getting their work paid. We also encourage light festivals around the world to join the program, give a chance to their local talents and help with increasing both the artistic level and knowledge of projection mapping all around the globe.
The Masterclass is a program that gives upcoming artists with previous experience in animation and motion design an opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of video mapping, and to gain practical knowledge in projection mapping and animation for these works. We are not looking for perfection – it’s important for us that there’s a good balance among the participants in terms of style, and we choose the best applicant for each style we want to see represented. An artist might have a great idea, but their animations skills need some improvement and that’s absolutely fine. Some skills can’t be taught and may well be more valuable in the decision making. We are looking for artists with a strong interest in projection mapping, who are determined and passionate about this form of art; uniqueness, a fresh approach, someone with a desire to learn and put 100% in.
